Phrasal verbs with "get"

Get up

1. To start your day.

يَسْتَيْقِظ / يَنْهَض

I need to get up at 6AM tomorrow for an early exam.


2. To rise or stand.

يَقِف / يَنْهَض

In a court of law, when the judge enters the room, everyone must get up from their seats.


3. To go upstairs or to a higher place.

يَصْعَد / يَذْهَب إلى الأَعْلَى

My mom said to me, "Get up here and clean your room."


Get down

1. To descend from a higher place.

يَنْزِل / يَهْبِط

When I see my grandfather on a ladder, I ask him to get down because I'm afraid he will fall.


2. To become saddened or depressed.

يُحْزِن / يُكَئِّب

She gets down when she talks in a negative way.


3. To write or take notes.

يُدَوِّن / يَكْتُب

Our professor asked us if we got down the notes he gave us in class today.


4. To devote time to something in order to complete it.

يَتَفَرَّغ لِ / يُنْهِي

I really need to get down to writing the thank you notes for the gifts I received.


Get in

1. To reach a place.

يَصِل

My flight will get in late tonight.


2. To enter a place.

يَدْخُل / يَرْكَب

The man told his children to get in the car.


3. To find an opportunity to talk.

يَتَمَكَّن مِن الكَلام

He talked nonstop for 30 minutes about his new car and I couldn't get a word in.


4. To ask or hire a trained person to do something.

يَسْتَدْعِي

I need to get a carpenter in here to fix the door.


Get out

1. To exit or leave a place.

يُغادِر

We didn't get out of the movie theater until 1AM.


2. To remove something from something else.

يُزِيل

I tried many methods and I still couldn't get the grease spot out of my shirt.


3. To socialize and spend time with others.

يَخْرُج

She doesn't get out much since her divorce.


4. To derive meaning from something.

يَستنبِط

I didn't get much out of the book I just finished.


5. To avoid doing something you don't want to do.

يَتَمَلَّص مِن

I wish I could get out of attending the party tonight because I'm really tired.


6. To persuade someone to give you information.

حمله على الإفصاح

I asked her repeatedly how the car got dented and I couldn't get anything out of her.


Get along

1. Used to ask how well somebody is doing in a particular situation.

تستعمل للسؤال عن حال شخص ما

I asked my sister how she is getting along in her new job position.


2. To be friendly and agreeable with someone.

يَتَفَاهَم

My friend and I get along great and never fight.


Get around

1. To pass an obstacle.

يَتَجَاوَز / يَتَغَلَّب عَلَى

A tree fell across the bike path and I couldn't get around it.


2. To socialize or travel a lot.

يَتَنَقَّل / يُسَافِر كَثِيرًا

Since his retirement, he really gets around, taking many cruises.


3. For news or information to be exposed.

يَنْتَشِر / يَذِيع

It had only been one day since his arrest, and the news had already got around the whole town.
