Used as a way of saying "there you go" or "it's done".
وها أَنْتَ ذَا قد انتهت. وهذَا كلّ ما في الأمرِ.
Just add the ingredients, mix well, bake for 20 minutes, and Bob's your uncle - you have a delicious cake!
All mouth and no trousers
[British expression]
Someone who talks big or boasts, but doesn't take effective action.
جَعْجَاع: كثير الكلام بدون عمل.
Don't listen to him; he's all mouth and no trousers. He never follows through on his promises.
Chew the fat
To have a casual conversation, often with a friend, and discuss matters of mutual interest.
يُدردِشُ.
We sat around the fire, chewing the fat about old times and funny stories.
The tail wagging the dog
A situation where the person who shouldn't have power or authority is actually controlling the situation.
المَرْؤوس يتسَلَّطُ على الرَّئيس.. أي العكس تمَامًا: يصبِح من هو أقل شأناً أو قيمَة أو حجمًا يتحكَّم في الأمرِ ويُسيطر عليه.
In that company, it seems like the marketing department is the tail wagging the dog; they make all the decisions.
Everyone and their dog
A lot of people; a large group of individuals.
جَمَاعَةٌ/ مَجْمُوعَةٌ/ العديدُ مِنَ الأفراد.. أيْ بأعْدَادٍ كَثِيرَةٍ.
Everyone and their dog showed up at the concert last night; it was packed!
Buy the farm
To die; often used euphemistically.
تُوُفِّيَ: ماتَ.
He always dreamed of flying, but tragically he bought the farm in a plane crash last year.
For the birds
Something that is worthless or meaningless.
نصِفُ بِهذَا التَّعبِير (شيء مَا) علَى أنَّه: تَافِه/لا مَعنَى لَه؛ سَخِيف؛ لا قِيمَة لَه؛ عدِيم النَّفع؛ لاَ يُثِير الاهتِمَام/مُضجِر؛ غَير مُمْتِع /لا يبعَث علَى السُّرُور.
I tried reading that book, but it was just for the birds; I couldn't learn anything from it.
Throw the baby out with the bathwater
To discard something valuable while getting rid of something undesirable.
يَرمي السّمينَ مع الغَثّ.. أَيْ يتخلّصُ منَ الرَّدِيءِ والجَيِّدِ في نفس الوقتِ.
Yes, we need to make changes in the company, but let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater and lose all the experienced staff.
All talk and no action
Used to describe someone who speaks confidently or boasts about what they can do, but does not follow through with concrete actions or achievements.
جَعْجَاع: كثير الكلام بدون عمل.
The candidate made a lot of promises during the election campaign, but since taking office, it seems like they've been all talk and no action.
